Disease APHTHOUS ULCERS AND STOMATITIS
   
Definition Stomatitis presents with generalized inflammation of the oral mucosa due to various causes, including herpes, vincents stomatitis, gangrenous and candidial stomatitis, Behcet’s disease, and drug-induced Apthtous Ulcers present with painful oral ulcers varying in size from a mm to several centimeters, of unknown cause mostly over buccal and labial mucosa and lasting for 7-10days
   
Treatment For apthtous ulcers mostly symptomatic, with

A)    Local anesthetic lidocaine (2% viscous), oral rinses with half strength hydrogen peroxide.

B)     Smoking should be stopped.

C)    Steroid mouth gargles ot be tried.

D)    Applying a wet, squeezed out black tea bag to the ulcer regularly 34 times a day. The tannic acid promotes healing.

E)     Spraying beclomethasone on the ulcer surface 3 times a day helps or Triamcinolone oral paste (Tess) to be applied at bedtime.

F)     Tetracycline oral rinse – Empty contents of a 250 mg tetracycline capsule in 30ml water, shake well and use solution to swirl in mouth for 5 minutes every 3 hours and spit out. Tastes bitter but considerable shortness duration of ulcer.
 

Prolonged courses of B vitamin with lactobacillus help in many cases.
 

For stomatitis – Herpetic stomatitis – usually mild and requires No therapy. In immuno compromised, acyclovir (200mg 5 times a day for 7-14 days)
 

Antibiotics for gangrenous stomatitis.
 

Steroids and cytotoxic drugs for Behcet’s stomatitis.
 

Candidiasis Nystatin oral suspension (400, 000 units qid) for 10 day. Rinse and swallow. Can be given oral antifungals (Clotrimazole) oral solution for applicaton.
